Bit icy today, I found out while riding to work

Post by Dave »

The road conditions caught me out this morning.
A tropical +5 deg C at my home, no sign of ice or frost, so I took the bike again.

After a handful of progressive miles, while riding downhill I noticed some stuff on the middle third of my lane.
Strange I thought, does not look like salt/grit...oh bugger I thought while gently fettling the brakes and smoothly down changing.
A nice consistent coating of frost where previous tyre tracks had not crossed.
Some black ice where previous tyre tracks had crossed...FFS

Then half a mile on the mirrors, screen and visor started misting up...shame that did not happen a mile sooner.

Then the air temp gauge started to fall, hovering between zero and +1 all the way to Aberdeen.

At lunchtime I visited the Westhill service station...and there is still frost in the car park.

Looks like I will be washing the bike tonight so it can stay parked up for a few days until things warm up a few degrees.

Must be the only time in living memory when your place was warmer than the surrounding area ;)

Yeah thought I was gonna use the bike yesterday as well, it was 5 deg but felt colder so I chickened out. Just as well cos the car park at work was like a skating rink and I know I'd have defo come off which defo wouldn't have been good !

Air temperature and road surface temperature are rarely the same. Tarmac temp is usualy quite a few deg c less vs the air temp, especially at this time of year.

My road was white with frost & ice this morning so took the bus again today. That's the first week in a long time I haven't been on the bike.

I started a new job on the 4th so the bike has been garaged as I have been doing the nursery drop off and pick ups....... been icy and hovering around zero to minus 2 every morning bar one or two.

Managed 8000 last year without a job getting in the way :log
