Electrical Guru wanted

Post by stevemoid »

I'm having a wee problem with my indicators on my bike. The right side work fine, but the left front don't work and the left rear goes like crazy.

The front pair are normal lights and the back are LED's.

They all worked fine initially. Then they all went shifty with the front pair not working at all and the rears flashing quickly. I changed the fuses over and it worked.

Then they have went weird again, checked and changed the fuse with no change. Check the wiring and all looks ok. The Rear LEDs have resisters connected to them too.

Is there anyone experienced that could advise/take a look?

Cheers
Steve

Time to get the multimeter out by the sounds of it. See if you have a broken connection anywhere.

I wouldn't have a clue what to do with that to be honest.

The connections got a good look from the naked eye, thats about as far as my knowledge goes.

Sounds like you don't have enough load on the system.

Has the ballast resistor become disconnected from your rear indicator?

If you still had one of your original rear indicators try connecting that in parallel with the rear indicator and see if that makes the flashing return to normal.

As far as I could see, everything is connected fine.

Originals were chucked as I had to cut them off and broke them in the process. I'm going to strip back all the tape and see if I can find anything.

Would you think the issue would be with the rear ones? As I really don't want to hack away at the fronts again. They were a bloody nightmare. :log

Instinct tells me that alothough the resistor appears to be connected it is blown and is open circuit.

Just out of interest, you mentioned stripping back tape? How have you connected the wires?

Just with the connectors that were provided, they slot on. And wrapped them in electrical tape to save them coming loose or touching other wires.

or not getting any voltage,

or not getting rid of any available voltage,

no earth,

If as you say all the bulbs are working, how do you know BTW? how did you test them?

If the other side is working OK then check the bulb connection for voltage, if none, trace back to the next connection and try there, if the bulb lights up then you have a broken wire somewhere between the two connections. But before all that, run a temporary earth wire from the body of the bulb back to the battery and check again. If it lights up then you have a bad earth on that indicator.

If you are able to, take a multimeter and set it to "Ohms" which is a symbol that is a bit like an upside down U. Then touch the 2 connectors on the indicator and if you will have an "infinite" reading if the circuit is broken and a number if you have a good circuit...
