Major oil leak from my car - any suggesions?

Hi folks,
Any suggestions as to what the problem may be - I know very little about engines.
I bought a 2002 Ford Mondeo 2.0 LX on Thursday (from that wonderful place called Gumtree, full of genuine folk). It has only done 50k miles and everything seemed good, was serviced in December by Arnold Clark. 3 weeks ago, it had the entire clutch and also crankshaft seal replaced by Car Clinic in Altens (all under the previous ownership). There is a note on the invoice saying that they cannot put a warranty on it as the flywheel had excessive play.
Today, I drove from Aberdeen to Torphins and noticed that wherever I went...I left a nice pool of engine oil. I got it up on a mates jack and its actually gushing out.
I am no expert on engines...but it is coming out the front, half way up - around what looks like the starter motor or flywheel area (I cant see it properly)
The flywheel was tightened up during the service....which made my mate think that perhaps the threads on the crankshaft have been stripped? However, the engine is sounding sweet as anything -no knocking noises, etc.
Could it be that the crankshaft seal was not properly replaced?
I dont think it is anything to do with the clutch/flywheel because it is not transmission fluid, its definitely engine oil.
What else would cause so much oil to gush out from around that area? Has anyone experienced this before?
Any help appreciated. Its going to be a couple of weeks until my mechanic mate gets the chance to have a look at the engine properly, but I am just praying it wont be too costly...
Cheers
