better still….clean your visor once you have taken your kit off, then later in the rush to get to your bike you don’t have to faf about so much

And here was me thinking that within a motorcycle helpful tips thread, the word "kit" would have been associated the "bike kit" ie protective and/or water proof outer clothing used by the motorcyclist.

At the time I did not consider that someone one would reply with a smutty crude response about getting all naked and giving a helmet a good polishing

I am just thankful have no one has posted up about feeding their young poultry so much that it chocked

keep visor down when in standing traffic while someone in front using their window washers and spraying over their roof, Kinda stings the eyes and doesn't taste that good either....

On long tours - stop before you get tired. Generally speaking your bike is loaded up with camping gear/clothes/beer etc. so it's going to feel mighty heavy if you wait until you're tired to stop. That said it's also good advice to follow on all rides.

Clean your head light, and the rest or your lights and reflective bits

It is getting dark out there, cleaning your lights might help you see crap on the road, and cleaning the rest of your lights/reflective bits might help others see you

Look where you want the bike to go, not at the pothole/car/sheep/kerb that you want to avoid.
If you get caught on a sharp bend then the odds are the bike will go round if you do this.

In group runs its better to be at the back (at least in my opinion). No need to be on the rear tyre of the guy in front either, especially if you don't know the road.

Sometimes a straight is not a straight!

If your not sure about overtaking - don't do it! You'll get another chance soon enough.

Sometimes, though, its safer to overtake when you can see the oncoming car, at least you know how much space you have if you know your bike and can judge the move well.

Don't go on runs with mates that like to operate your kill switch without you knowing!

Oops, forgot the most important bit!

Only go as fast as you can see to stop.
ie tight bends that are blind, can you stop/slow down if there is something on the road?

Dont be in a hurry to set off on the bike where possible..

sadly I can count the times on one hand I have started to ride off having not checked i have correctly put on the lids chin strap.. luckily i have stopped pretty sharpish on realising. To avoid the hassle of taking off the gloves and starting again do a double check before leaving or do it right the first time)

maybe I am the only one that has done this but i defo thought its worth a wee mention as you only have to get it wrong once.

I have this 1st hand from a rider in front of me.. open pockets lead to a packet of smokes propelling off my lid at lightning speed..

Im always checking 3 times and he liked to tell me just do it once but do it properly

When filtering (or sitting on the right hand side of your lane in trafic) keep an eye on whats behind you.. you might not be the only one filtering or requiring room to get by..

Found another biker trying to filter past me when I was already filtering past trafic, it gave me quite the fright at how close it was...

Im not commenting on the other riders judgement probably just in a big hurry to beat the trafic.. not an often occurrence but I find I personally can be mislead into thinking I may be the only biker filtering at one time.

Never pass up the chance to use a toilet. Nowt worse when you've only done a few miles out the road and the cold air gets your bladder moving

Also beware of bicycles filtering in slow moving or stationary traffic. There seems to be an increasing number of cyclists happy to switch between slipping up the left of stationary traffic and using the gap between lanes.
