When did we lose the ability to navigate without technology?

Was in Manchester for a meeting yesterday and totally reliant on satnav. Hire car satnav was well out of date and didn't even show the location for the hire car depot of local roads.

Sorted with use of the phone satnav and some guesswork. Without it I had no idea where I was heading.

Is it just laziness or are we evolving to lose our inner compass?

Nothing wrong with my inner compass, and I manage to take the best route home every night 'onist, ok maybe a wee detour every now and again, especially on Fridays, and the occasional Tuesday & Thursday, and Mondays to start the week off well...and of course Wednesdays for a mid week extended run home

Never has a problem with Nav

I revise on google maps beforehand so I'm vaguely familiar with a route, sat nav goes on as an extra back up, mostly just so I can keep track of my ETA (when in the car). I generally like to think i have a decent sense of direction,.... except in edinburgh - I just get lost there, if its nae waverly/princes STD or murrayfield I'm buggered.

Was reasonalby chuffed navigating down to leicester/silverstone last year for motogp, just stopping every so often to check my phone map/location as a rough guide. COming home was a laugh,.... just point the nose north and gooooooooooooooo!

With his help this evening, it only took me 140 miles to get home

In the past we'd have spent more time looking at map before leaving, or got the old A-Z out, maybe even asked someone, but not before being so lost you are nearly disappearing up your own arse. On top of that we'd have read the road signs. Now SatNav tells us where to go, so don't look at the signs.
