Varied 125cc season reflected at FIM Awards

Five different riders took honours at the FIM Awards for the 125cc category in Valencia.

The 2008 125cc World Championship season had experienced a nine-rider strong selection of racewinners over the course of the year, and the competitive nature of the class was made apparent at last Sunday´s FIM Awards ceremony. Five of said victors received prizes for their varied achievements in 2008 in the Valencia event.

The most coveted prize, that of 125cc World Champion, was given to Mike di Meglio. The Frenchman had clinched the crown in Australia at the beginning of the month, and collected his award in front of his peers to end what might be his final season in the class. Only the second French 125cc title winner, Di Meglio is also his country´s youngest World Champion in Grand Prix racing.

The 20 year-old won four Grands Prix en route to his title triumph, also taking his first ever pole position during the campaign.

Second and third in the standings, respectively, Simone Corsi and Gabor Talmacsi received their rewards alongside Di Meglio. Talmacsi also received the `Tissot Pole of Poles´ award for his four pole positions in the 2008 campaign.

Rookie of the Year went to Scott Redding, who had provided one of the memorable moments of the season with his home triumph in Donington Park. The Briton had a sterling first year in World Championship racing, and will be aiming for even better in 2009.

Best Privateer went to Nico Terol, the winner of the abridged first 125cc race at Indianapolis and a revelation in his first season as a Jack&Jones WRB rider.
