MotoGP returns to 1,000cc engines in 2012

Post by Zax »

NEW REGULATIONS for the 2012 MotoGP season, when the series returns to 1,000cc engines, have been confirmed by the FIM.

The switch back to big-bore motors was announced in December 2009, with a limit of four cylinders and a maximum bore of 81mm. The newest regulations, outlined during a meeting yesterday, further defined the technical regulations for the 2012 season.

Teams racing on 800cc motorcycles must meet a minimum weight of 150 kg while teams racing prototype motorcycles with increased capacity must use machines weighing at least 153 kg. A 21-litre fuel tank capacity and six engine limit per rider/per season will also be in place.

Clear so far?

Privateer teams, now called “Claiming Rule Teams" (CRT) will be limited to 12 engines per rider and have a fuel tank capacity of 24 litres, instead of 21. Further CRT regulations are to be announced in the coming weeks.
